Winter Wellness

There are lots of ways to boost your immune system and keep yourself healthy during the Winter. Here are some herbal ideas.

(Please speak to a doctor or herbalist before taking herbs if you have any chronic conditions or are on any medications.)

Try an Immune boosting herbal tea:

2 sage leaves
A sprig of rosemary
1 tsp of lavender
1 bay leaf

Brew in a teapot or cup with a lid for 10 minutes before enjoying a peaceful moment to drink it.

Thyme Tea (I like this to soothe a sore throat)
Makes 1 cup

3 sprigs of thyme
A squeeze of lemon
1/8 tsp of honey

Brew the thyme for 10 minutes, add the lemon and honey and enjoy.

Elderberry Syrup

Elderberries
Cinnamon sticks,
Root ginger
plus any spices of your choice.
Sugar (1lb of sugar to 1 pint of liquid)
Water to cover.

1. Place the elderberries in a pan (you can remove them us from the stems using a fork)
2. Cover the berries with water, add the spices and ginger and bring to the boil, before turning down the heat and simmering for 20 minutes.
3. Strain the mixture through a muslin cloth and sieve into a glass bowl, using a spoon to help get all of the juice through.
4. Wash out the pan.
5. Measure the strained mixture and add it back into the pan.
6. Add  the sugar in a ratio of 1lb for every pint of liquid.
7. Gently heat through until it is simmering.Keep stirring all of the time until the mixture becomes syrupy.
8. Pour it into a sterilised glass jar or bottle.
(You can sterilise them by putting them in the oven at 180 degrees for 30 minutes, before allowing to cool)
9. Enjoy a teaspoon in a cup of hot water.

I like this recipe for soothing chesty coughs
